Best time to visit ashrams in India by region
Monsoon timing, winter cold and summer heat by region — and how they affect an ashram stay in the north, south and elsewhere.
Updated 2026-10-22
India's climate varies widely. These patterns come from the India Meteorological Department (IMD); always check the forecast and the ashram's calendar (festivals and big programmes can fill rooms).
The monsoon calendar
According to IMD's normal dates, the southwest monsoon reaches Kerala around 1 June, covers the whole country by around 8 July, and withdraws from the country by around 15 October. Tamil Nadu and nearby coastal areas get much of their rain from the northeast monsoon (October–December).
North: Rishikesh, Haridwar & the Himalayan foothills (Uttarakhand)
- October–November and February–April: generally the most comfortable months.
- December–January: cold, especially mornings in unheated halls; pack warm layers.
- May–June: hot in the plains and foothill towns.
- July–September: monsoon; IMD and state authorities often warn of heavy rain and landslides on hill roads — check travel advisories.

South: Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka
- December–March: drier and comparatively pleasant in most of the south.
- April–May: hot and humid.
- June–September: southwest monsoon, heaviest on the Kerala and Karnataka coasts. Some people deliberately choose this season for Ayurvedic treatments; follow the ashram's own guidance.
- October–December: northeast monsoon rains in Tamil Nadu and southern Kerala.

Festivals and crowds
Major festivals and gatherings (for example Shivaratri, Guru Purnima or an ashram's founder's anniversary) can be the most special time to visit but also the busiest; book early and confirm whether regular programmes run.
